How to Make Pureed Oatmeal

Oatmeal was the first form of solids we introduced to our baby boy. I wanted to give him something healthy and full of nutrients. What’s so wonderful about oatmeal is that it has whole grains, fiber, protein, and iron-just to name a few. These nutrients, including whole grain, are very important for the baby (and us) to consume on a daily basis. Also, I like to purchase the Organic Old Fashioned Oats so I can cook it myself over the stove top. Please refer to the oat package’s cooking instructions for appropriate cook time. For additional information about oatmeal, please refer to this provided WebMD link www.webmd.com/diet/oatmeal-benefits#1

Step by step instructions

Add 1 cup of water (I use filtered water) to a saucepan and cover it with a lid.

Bring the water to a boil.

Add 1/2 cup of oats to the boiling water and give it a stir.

Once it starts to boil again, cover it with a lid and lower the heat to low to bring it to a simmer.

Don’t step away because it might start to foam up. Make sure to remove the lid once it begins to foam to prevent a spill.  Once the foam goes down, you can place the lid over the saucepan again.

Stir occasionally.

Once most of the liquid has been absorbed (about 3 minutes), remove the lid and cook it until the rest of the liquid is absorbed. At this point, when you mix the oats you will still notice some liquid.

Continue to stir occasionally.

Once the oats have absorbed all of the water, it is done (about 2 minutes). At this point, the oatmeal should also be soft in texture. Allow the oatmeal to cool slightly.

Don’t place it in the blender when it’s too hot.

Pour the oatmeal into a blender. Add 1/4 cup of water. Blend the mixture until it’s pureed or to your liking of consistency. You may add more water if you like, just don’t exceed 1/2 cup. The oatmeal might absorb some of the added water. At this point, if you don’t have a blender, you may use a mesh strainer. Place the cooked oatmeal into a mesh strainer and place the strainer over a bowl. Use the back of a spoon to apply force to the oatmeal against the strainer. Continue to apply force with the spoon and move the spoon left and right. Pureed like consistency will strain through the mesh strainer. Make sure to wipe some of the pureed oatmeal from the outside of the strainer as it might attach to it.

Here is the blended consistency I prefer.

I like to place my pureed oatmeal into these Ball Glass Jars. Let them cool before storing it in the refrigerator. This recipe will make one 8 ounce jar of pureed oatmeal. I store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Recipe:

Pureed Oatmeal: 8 Ounce Serving

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of uncooked Organic Old Fashioned Rolled Oats.
  • 1 Cup of filtered water
  • 1/4-1/2 cup of additional filtered water to blend the cooked oatmeal

Instructions:
Please also refer to the oat’s cooking instructions for cook times and preparation steps.

Add 1 cup of filtered water to a saucepan. Bring the water to a boil. Once it starts to boil, add 1/2 cup of oats and give it a stir. Cover the saucepan with a lid and lower the heat to low. Bring the water with the oats to a simmer and allow it to simmer until the oats have absorbed most of the water (this can take about 3 minutes).

Don’t walk away from the saucepan since the content can start to foam up. If it does start to create some foam, raise the lid and allow the foam to go down. Once it’s gone away, place the lid back on.

Remember to stir occasionally.

After 3 minutes, you will notice most of the water has been absorbed. If you were to stir the oats, you will notice it still has some water it needs to absorb. Remove the lid and allow it to cook for an additional 2 minutes or until all the liquid has been absorbed and the oatmeal is at a soft consistency.Allow the oatmeal to cool slightly.

Don’t place it in the blender when it’s too hot.

Place the oatmeal in a blender and add 1/4 cup of filtered water. Blend the oatmeal until all the oats have been blended. If you notice it’s still pasty or not as liquidity or to your liking, add a little bit more water and blend the oatmeal. The end result should be of pureed oatmeal.

Place them into glass jars and let them cool. Store it in the refrigerator.
